The amount of portions you get from a cake differs depending on whether it is fruit or sponge, round or square, if it is served as a main dessert or as a buffet sized portion and of course who cuts the cake!
Below is a general guide to how many portions you will get from both sponge and fruit cakes in both round and square shapes.
If you require a shaped novelty cake then this will of course be different and you can contact me to discuss your individual requirements.
| Size | Sponge cake portions (2" by 1") | Fruit Cake Portions (1" by 1") |
| Round / Square | Round / Square | |
| 6" | 14 / 18 | 28 / 36 |
| 8" | 25 / 32 | 50 / 64 |
| 10" | 39 / 50 | 78 / 100 |
| 12" | 56 / 72 | 113 / 144 |
Wedding Cake Portions/Sizes
Calculating how many portions you require will help you decide what size, shape or how many tiers you will need.
For example a wedding with 150 guests = a cake with 150 portions.
A 3 tier round fruit wedding cake of 6”, 8” and 10” = 156 portions
A 3 tier square sponge wedding cake of 8”, 10” and 12” = 154 portions
Or you could mix Fruit and sponge and have a 10” round fruit, 8” sponge, 6” sponge = 117 and then have a spare cutting cake to serve the rest of your guests.
